This 43k SBA has around 50% of its lacquer remaining. We have chosen to
err on the side of caution and calling this a very well done factory
relac. Although the engraving looks original, with the correct
sharpness and light reflection, the color of the lacquer is correct for
an original 1951 American assembled SBA, there remains an indicator
that it could be an extremely well done factory relacquer. This horn
was most certainly hand-buffed with no indication of machine buffing
The horn is in good condition. Bell flare and bottom bow do not show
any signs of past repairs and are in perfect shape. The matching
numbered neck is at correct angle and round shape. There was a plug
near the neck cork and we removed it and installed a new plug that is
flush on both inside and outside (please see pics).
The horn has a recent pad job in it (not by us) and we have gone
through the horn to ensure pefect playing condition.
It is a terrific player! The tone-feel is round and very focused -
projects out like a tight beam of sound! The sound is very "shape-able"
with a concentration in the mid and high mid-tone frequencies. It feels
fluid and quick under your fingers and is really a joy to play. A
really great example of why so many players seek out these SBA tenors!
